In a world of convenience and Two Day Shipping, why would you go out of your way to buy here, directly from me?

Look, I get it. It's easier to buy from Other Places that have free shipping and thousands of products in one place and make returns stupid easy. But the convenience comes at a cost.

When you buy digital products from big retailers, you aren't actually buying--you're longterm loaning. You get a license, not a product. Which means that it can be revoked at any time for any reason. And when you buy anything from big retailers, what you pay gets chopped up and spread--I get some, but a good chunk goes to the megacorp.

Alternatively, when you buy from my website, what you pay for is what you actually get: you have that file. It's yours and I can't take it back just because the mood strikes me.

And, more profoundly, you are making a positive impact in my life. I'm one woman, with a family that depends on my income. That book you just bought isn't lining a megacorp pocket, it's funding my next grocery trip. It's covering homeschool curriculum. It's going into a new pair of shoes for my kid-that-grows-like-a-weed. It's part of the next charitable donation I make (one of my life goals is to fund an entire new church building).
